Be the creative spirit in an edtech startup building the greatest educational games. EduMode is an educational technology startup founded in 2016 and based in Copenhagen. Our ambition is to create the world’s most exciting and compelling educational games by combining didactics with mainstream game designs.

We are currently a team of 2 fun and young people, but we wish to expand the team with a passionate and driven creative resource who wants to be a part of our exciting journey and help take the business to the next level. You will join the team as THE creative spirit and be responsible for all of our graphic and visual content.

We recently received great financial support from the Danish Ministry of Education to the development of our game, Robot Laser Tag. We want our game to impress, motivate and enjoy students not only in Denmark, but all over the world.

About the game

Robot Laser Tag is a combined strategy and action math game where two teams play against each other. The game is for students in 7-10th grade.

In teams of 4, the students must develop a game strategy to a specific game mode (e.g. capture the flag). The students’ strategy will be based on mathematic calculations and assumptions, and the result of their strategy is experienced first-handed in a first person shooter match with an opponent team.

1) Strategy

In the first and strategic part, the team take on jobs like engineers, programmers, architects and scientists, and work together in order to come up with appropriate strategy to the level’s game mode and many challenges and hurdles by using mathematic theory and calculations. The students will be required to build their own robots (avatar), weapons, minions and home base, as this will constitute their strategy. A key feature is an AR hack, which will enable students to build parts of the level in the physical world and integrate this virtually in the game through augmented reality.

2) Action

In the second part of the game, the students will have to execute their strategy in a fight against another team. Here, each student controls his/her own robot in a first person shooter game. The team works together on the field to solve the level’s game design (e.g. capture the flag).

Robot Laser Tag is still in development, however a smaller version of the game for 4-6th graders is currently being tested in schools all over Denmark. The current design of the game is temporary, however, as the game will have to run on crappy school computers, it does challenge our freedom and creativity, and thus, keep the design and style simplistic.

Working at EduMode

As the team is small and informal, you will be working closely with the whole team on a daily basis. Your main responsibility will be to develop the visual concept of our current game, but you will also be asked to join in on the creative development of the game and its future features. Your skills and creativity will have few limits; we value your expertise and trust your judgement, and will let you determine the visual direction of the game. You will be joining as the only person with a background in design – this means, that you will have the full responsibility and leverage in designing the game’s visual look. You must expect to get all your design skills in use – from creating concept art, mood boards, 2D graphics for marketing and websites to developing 3D assets and designing game levels.

The team currently consists of a CEO with a business background and a CTO with a background in interaction design. We are looking to add a game programmer as well.

The job

The position can be fulltime or part-time depending on you. As we are a startup with limited resources, and we all try to put in as many hours as we can. We expect you to be able to work at least 15 hours/week.

The job is currently unpaid, but you will receive an equity stake in the company. We are flexible, so if you are still a student or work another job, we will find a solution. All we need from you is a great attitude and the ability to execute on time. We expect to be able to pay a salary to all team members no later than by September 2017.
